Alex Derkach passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 12, 2019 at the Erickson Nursing Home. He was born January 6, 1925 in Seech, Manitoba to Harry and Mary Derkach. He grew up and farmed in the Seech area. In 1953 he met and married Margaret Chobotiuk and resided in Oakburn, Manitoba, later moving to the Seech District and then resided in Onanole where they raised their children until her untimely passing in 1969. In 1979 Alex married Dorothy Safroniuk and lived in Onanole until 2014 when they moved into the Erickson Nursing Home.
In 1952 Alex started working in Riding Mountain National Park. He worked there for ten years as a buffalo caretaker. Alex received a new job as a labourer for the Riding National Park and worked there until his retirement in October 1990.
Alex enjoyed the outdoors. He was always tending to his large garden and yard. He also enjoyed hunting in the fall with grandsons.
He will be lovingly missed by his wife Dorothy, daughters Darlene (Brian), Joanne (Roy), son David (Karen); grandchildren Tanya (Wayne), Mark, Christina (Duane), Darren, Dean (Madison), Kenneth (Lana), Nolan, Zachary; great-grandchildren Brayden, Colton, Karsyn, Jade, Parker, Kazmira and Nevada. Alex is also survived by step-children Larry, Joanne and Susan along with their families. He was predeceased by his parents, daughter Donna, brother Steven and stepson Michael.
Funeral service will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Jude’s Roman Catholic Church, (Ukrainian Catholic Service), Erickson, MB with Fr. Emil Kardasinec officiating. Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Erickson, MB. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
