Joan Calvert Obituary

Margaret “JOAN” Calvert
January 6, 1933 – November 21, 2019
Joan Calvert passed away suddenly on November 21, 2019 at the age of 86 at the Assiniboine Hospital in Brandon. Joan is survived by her children Robert (Sharon) Calvert, Cathy(Greg) Setter, Leo(Alice)Calvert, her Grandchildren, Clinton Calvert, Tracy Sutherland(Chris), Brian Lemky(Missy), David Eden, Matthew Eden(Nichole), Curtis Calvert(Wendy), Deanne Setter-Shwaluk(Rob), Michelle Setter(Myles Shastko), Michael Calvert(Kelsey), Mark Calvert(Kendall), Matthew Calvert (Courtney), 15 Great-Grandchildren, 2 Great-Great Grandchildren, Sister-in-law Edna Stewart of Melfort, SK, and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by her parents Fred and Alice Wright, her Husband Melvin Calvert, her two sons Larry and Ross Calvert, her sisters, Kay Ruth, Clara Hay, Doris Rasmussen, Edith Reynolds, Jean Wright and Marjorie Calvert.
Joan grew up on the farm near Sidney and attended Sidney School. After high school she took a secretarial course in Brandon and then worked at a Doctor’s office in Portage until she married Melvin on July 14, 1951. Together they farmed in the Melbourne district. They had five children, Robert, Larry, Catherine, Leo and Ross. Joan worked at the doctor’s office in Carberry and at the Melbourne post office occasionally and then carried on running the post office from their home on the farm until the post office closed. She was a member of the Sidney United Church and UCW. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Carberry.
Joan and her husband retired from the farm in 1979 and moved to Brandon where Joan worked seasonally as a receptionist for Barrie Wood Carpet Cleaning for some years. For many years she enjoyed spending their winters in Palm Springs in the warm weather. They moved into Victoria Landing Assistant Living in 2015 and in the last two months Joan lived at Valleyview Personal Care Home.
Joan was a loving mother and Grandmother. She took great enjoyment visiting with her children and Grandchildren. Later, her greatest joy was to have her great-grandchildren visit. In the last few years, her favorite pastimes were word searches and watching her grandsons’ hockey games.
Joan will be sadly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Funeral Service will take place at Carberry United Church at 11:00 am
