It is with great sadness that we announce that our beloved sister and aunt, Alice Diane Birnie, surrounded by family, passed away at the Grace Hospice in Winnipeg on Sept. 6, 2023, at the age of 71. Alice, the youngest of the family was born on Oct. 11,1951 in Neepawa, MB to Roy and Stella Birnie.
Alice graduated from NACI in 1969 and moved to Winnipeg to work. She briefly moved to Edmonton and then returned to Winnipeg. She worked for the RBC for 19 years in Winnipeg and Roblin, recreation worker at Tuxedo Villa for 10 years and then administrative work at a variety of places until her retirement in 2017. Throughout the years she travelled to many places with family and friends and had many great adventures meeting numerous new friends.
Her greatest honor was being a sister, aunt, and great aunt. Family was her everything and she enjoyed attending the many sports, school and other events of the nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Her Happy Place was at the Cabin in the old campground at Clear Lake. Nothing was more calming than the sound of the loons and watching the sunsets. She enjoyed every season up there visiting friends and family and participating in all the cook shack shenanigans.
Her battle with cancer was very brief but we find solace knowing that she is at peace now and that she will forever be in our hearts and memories. “In the garden of Happy Memories there is always sunshine.”
Alice was predeceased by her parents Roy & Stella Birnie, sister-in-law Carolyn (spouse of Bonar), sister Jean Birnie and other family and friends.
She will be forever missed and loved by brother Bonar (Jackie Snider) and children Cole- Serenity and Kingston; Renee Theriault- Shaun, Zoe, Brianna, and Brandon. Brother Bob (Nina) and children Laura Lee Birnie- Chelsea Shearer, Stacey (fiancée Mike Lelievre) and James Shearer; Tana (Greg) Squires- Brendan and Mason. Brother John (Mary Jo) and children Sheldon (Clara)- Jack and Stella; Alisa (Greg) Mayberry-Winnie and Olive; Ian; Jaydn.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care and the Grace Hospice for the care they provided for Alice. Thank you to all the friends that reached out to Alice and family during these last difficult few months and to White’s Funeral Home for your caring and assistance.
As per Alice’s wishes, a small family graveside celebration of life will be held at the Neepawa Riverside Cemetery on Sept.19. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
