Darcy Kowalick Obituary

It is with deep sadness that the family of Darcy Kowalick announce his passing on September 24, 2023, at his home in Minnedosa, at the age of 60 years.

Darcy Johnny James was born at Minnedosa District Hospital on the evening of February 10, 1963, the first of three sons born to Walter and Evelyn Kowalick.

Growing up on the family farm north of Basswood, Darcy began showing his caring and helpful nature from a very early age. With the arrival of his younger brothers, Alvin and Blaine, Darcy proudly took on the role of big brother and protector of his younger siblings. Little Darcy was always trying to help his mom look after his younger siblings and looked out for them whenever he could. These kind, caring and helpful traits remained with Darcy throughout his life and he was always willing to lend a helping hand whether it was for a family member, friend or complete stranger in need.

Darcy received his schooling in Minnedosa and following graduation from Minnedosa Collegiate entered the work force as a general labourer. Throughout his life, Darcy held various jobs and wasn’t afraid to take on numerous professions. Unfortunately, poor health in recent years left Darcy unable to continue to work.

The highlight of his life came in December 1986, when Darcy became a father to his only son, Devin James.  As Devin grew, he and Darcy became more than father and son, they were best friends and shared many common interests which created many lasting memories of great times spent together.

Darcy had a keen interest in nature and the great outdoors which stemmed from being raised in the country around farming, animals, nature, and fresh air.  He also showed a great interest in cars and sports, especially bowling and hockey. Darcy not only enjoyed watching hockey, whether it was a live game or on tv, but also enjoyed hitting the ice and playing the game into his young adult years.

When Darcy took an interest in something he jumped right in and gave it his all. In addition to sports, Darcy enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and just hanging out with friends and family.  Throughout his life, Darcy won numerous awards and honours for his various talents and achievements in these areas of interest. In his younger years, Darcy frequently participated and came out on top at bowling and hockey tournaments and in more recent years, at fishing derbies and Big Buck Night. He also won a lot of card games against friends and family!

Darcy was predeceased by his grandparents, John and Annie Kowalick and Jim and Gunhild Bold, uncles Allan Bold, Peter Kowalick and Melvin Wade, aunt Alice Wade and cousin Elaine Challborn.

Left to mourn his passing are his son, Devin (Jen), granddaughter Evelyn, parents Walter and Evelyn, brothers Alvin (Patti) and Blaine (Taresa), nieces Kailey (Brandon) and their family, Lindsay (Kris) and their family, nephew Ricky (Hayley) and their family as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, friends, and acquaintances.

A celebration of Darcy’s life was held at White’s Funeral Home in Minnedosa on Wednesday, October 4th, followed by a private family interment at Minnedosa Cemetery.
