Diane Cottingham Obituary

Diane Margaret Cottingham, born December 9, 1955, passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2026.

Diane was the beloved daughter of Peter and Muriel Cottingham, both predeceased. She was a cherished sister to Marilyn Cottingham Shinyei of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; David Cottingham and his wife Rebecca of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts; Karen Cottingham of Calgary, Alberta; and Joy MacLean and her husband Cam of Matlock, Manitoba. Diane’s cousin Lois and her husband Allan Hyndman of Cardale, Manitoba were also like a sister and brother in their care and devotion to her.

Diane adored her many nieces and nephews, as well as their children, and they had a special place in their hearts for their Auntie Diane. All of them conceded that she was hard to beat at cards, especially a game called Donuts. She rarely turned down a chance to start a new round.

She was an integral part of the Touchwood community for decades, attending the workshop and working in their store. Touchwood’s staff and life-skill workers helped her to live in her own apartment and maintain her independence until just the last few years. For many years she was a familiar sight around town, bravely pedaling her chain-driven trike. As her mobility declined, she switched to an electric scooter but continued to be seen regularly on downtown sidewalks.

Her favourite movie was The Sound of Music, which we watched together often. Diane had a beautiful singing voice. She sang in the United Church choir for at least three decades, and loved singing along to her CD collection. In the minutes before she died, waiting for paramedics to arrive, she and a healthcare aide sang “Amazing Grace.”

Diane’s family extends heartfelt thanks to all the people in Neepawa who supported Diane with their friendship —especially Deb Goossen, Yvonne Ferguson, Brian Bailey and the best ever next-door neighbours, the Huxleys. A special thanks to the caring staff at Country Meadows who made Diane’s well-being their priority and always took time to make her laugh.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Neepawa United Anglican Church
