Edel Thompson Obituary

Edel Annie Thompson passed away July 29, 2024, at the Neepawa Health Centre. Edel was born September 2, 1931 in Rakvag, Norway, and was raised and educated in a rural area near the small village of Fevag in the Trondheim Region in West Central Norway.

Growing up in Norway during the German occupation during World War Two came with many hardships and challenges. This experience, however, perhaps may have helped shape Edel’s personality into one of strength and resilience.

She attended college, studying Home Economics and soon became an excellent cook and worked various places in Norway. In the early 1950’s Edel emigrated to Canada to live with her Aunt in Calgary. Not knowing English and Canadian customs proved to be interesting but she soon adapted to her new country.

Edel later married Mike Smylski, and raised a family in Calgary. She worked in many food stores and eventually became a deli manager at a large Co-op store in her last years in Calgary.

After meeting Ron, Edel moved to Basswood in 1982 and began a new life as a farmer’s wife. She really enjoyed the farm, along with the hard work and fun times. Loving to entertain, the coffee pot was always on, (although sometimes a little strong).  If she didn’t find a party, she was quick to start one. Edel’s big smile and laughter will not be forgotten.

In 1998, the farm was sold and a move was made to an acreage near Minnedosa, allowing much more time for travelling and hobbies. A main activity grew from Edel’s love of art and painting leading her to many art classes and seminars.

Edel was extremely proud of her Norwegian Heritage, visiting family and friend in Norway many times. She also visited and took part in the Scandinavian Festival in Minot “Norsk-Hostfest” for a number of years.

In November 2023, medical problems caused Edel to move to “The Land of The Vikings” at the Erickson Personal Care Home, which became her new home for her remaining time. Her energetic and fun-loving spirit was not to be slowed down. Edel had a lot of “spunk” which was sometimes troublesome for the nursing staff, but underneath it all, was a heart of gold. Edel received wonderful care from all the staff, always being treated with a great deal of dignity and compassion. Ron and Family will be forever grateful. “Tusen Takk”

Edel was predeceased by her parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Marie (Karsten), Bjornhild (Oddvar); first husband, Mike Smylski; daughter-in-law, Lee (Brent)

Edel will be lovingly remembered by her husband Ron; sons Steinar (Mari-Ann), Todd (Joey), Brent; Grandchildren Jason, Eirik, Morten, Linn (William); Great Grandchildren Liam, Matheo; Several nephews and special Niece Kari-Ann and her family; also Ron’s sister & husband Joyce and Stan along with their children Carolyn (Niall), Joe (Michelle); & their grandchildren Jack, Leo, Kort, Kaden, Lexi.

A Family Graveside service was held August 8, 2024, at the Basswood Cemetery, with Julie Hutton officiating. White’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
