James "Elgin" Farrell Obituary

James Elgin Farrell passed away January 14, 2022 in Minnedosa Hospital.  Elgin was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret Farrell, on January 16, 2017.

Elgin was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on November 2, 1943, the youngest son of Bob and Phyllis Farrell.

Elgin’s dad’s career as a CN man led the family to live in many different towns including McCreary, Franklin, Cardale and Rapid City.  Elgin finished his schooling in Rapid City.

Some of his working career included time at Poole Elevator, Muttart Homes, Managro Harvestore and Maple Leaf Foods.

Elgin was a hard working man and his working career led him to Brandon where he met Margaret McFarlin.  They were married in Foxwarren, Manitoba on November 14, 1970.  Elgin and Marg resided in Brandon, Winnipeg and finally settled in Rapid City for their retirement years.

Elgin and Marg loved visiting family and friends and enjoyed many different sports including participating in hockey, softball and curling.  In later years, they enjoyed watching their nephews, nieces, cousins and friends’ kids participating in all their sports and activities.

Elgin and Marg loved their pets and everybody else’s as if they were their own.  Elgin’s pockets or vehicle always had dog treats in them.  Elgin had a great sense of humour, and he always enjoyed a good joke.  His laugh was infectious.  Elgin and Marg loved playing cards, games, sitting around a campfire and listening to country music.  Elgin loved watching “Turner Classic Movies” even after seeing the same movie several times.  He also loved to watch curling, the Jets and the Bombers.  Both Elgin and Marg loved attending all family gatherings and social events.

Left to cherish his memory are brother Murray Farrell (Shirley), niece: Elaine (Alan) and nephews: Barry, Dennis and Lorne (Regina); brother-in law Bill McFarlin (Lyla), nieces: Deana (Kim) and Michele; sister-in law Wilma Kilarski, nieces: Jacqui (Dan) and Bobbi Jo (Jay); sister-in law Cathy Heise (Harvey), nephews: Shawn (Jenn) and Ryan (Melanie); brother-in law Ken McFarlin (Irene), nephews: Bryce (Michelle) and Chris (Mlee); and many great nieces and great nephews.  “Uncle Elgin” will forever hold a special place in everyone’s hearts.

Elgin was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret of 46 years, his parents Bob and Phyllis Farrell, brothers George Farrell and Lloyd Farrell, brother-in law Lou Kilarski, nephew Gary Farrell.
