Linda (Lynn) Marie Burgess

In Loving Memory of Linda Marie Burgess
March 30, 1938 – May 28, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Linda (Lynn) Marie Burgess on May 28th, 2026 in Shoal Lake, Manitoba. Born on March 30th, 1938, in Russell, she was the first child of John and Bernice Rutherford. She was predeceased by her husband, James (Jim) Burgess, her brother Norrie Rutherford, sister Glenda Reid, brothers-in-law Kenneth Burgess, Clayton Reid, and Norman Bertram, sister-in-law Jean Burgess and nephew Rob Frame.

Lynn is survived by her four children, Rick(Sherri), Jan (Garry) Chambers, Terry (Debbie), Scott (Alison), sister-in-law Marilyn Rutherford & Murray Newitt, and many nieces & nephews.   Forever cherished and remembered by her 12 Grand Children; Glen, Dustin, Dana (Jessica), Bernie (Rhaena), Jaremy (Christine), Josh (Ashley), Marshal (Sarah), Melissa (Tom) Anderson, Mitchell (Megan), Ashton (Ryan) Shaw, Kaitlyn (Randy Loucks), Abby Rowan and her 17 Great Grand Children; Cain, Arwen, Pierce, Mya, Alaira, Madison, Owen, Cordelia, John Terry, Brinley, James, Madilyn, Ethan, Leah, Mazey, Liza, and Aurora.

A Life Rooted in Community and Family

Lynn spent her early years in the Silverton area, where she attended school and helped on the family farm, forming a deep connection to rural life and family values. From Grades 3 through 11, she lived in Shoal Lake, where she became a familiar and friendly face at her father’s Avalon Theatre. Lynn especially enjoyed working as an usher, greeting guests with her warm smile—though she was less fond of making popcorn.

In her Grade 12 year, life brought another change as the family moved to Minnedosa. There, her father purchased a sporting goods store, later expanding it into electronics and bringing some of the first televisions to the community—an exciting time that Lynn witnessed firsthand.

After graduating, Lynn pursued her passion for learning at the University of Manitoba, earning a degree in Home Economics in 1958. True to her caring nature, she embraced this chapter wholeheartedly, building lasting friendships and becoming actively involved in university life.

Following her graduation, Lynn returned to Minnedosa, eager to put her knowledge and skills to good use.

Love and Partnership

Lynn met the love of her life, Jim Burgess, at her going-away party in Shoal Lake in 1954. Their connection blossomed into a lifelong partnership marked by love, laughter, and mutual respect. They married in Minnedosa on June 11, 1958, just weeks after her graduation from the University of Manitoba, and shared a life filled with adventure, family, and cherished memories.

A Legacy of Service and Passion

Lynn was a devoted and active member of the Minnedosa community, giving her time and care generously to the places and people she cherished. Through her involvement with her church, and organizations like the Kinsmen Ladies, Rotary, and Beta Sigma Phi, she built strong connections and contributed quietly but meaningfully to community life.  She was also a steady and supportive presence beside Jim during his 12 years on the town council, serving as his trusted “advisor” and sounding board.

Lynn’s passions included competing at whatever she did including golf, curling, fishing, singing, cards, bridge, in which she and Jim earned their Master titles in 2000. Of course, the events always followed with a happy hour with her teammates or competitors, the motley crew or her condo friends. Family trips, summer days at Clear Lake, and winters in Mesa, Arizona, were filled with laughter, love, and the joy of shared experiences.

A Life Well Lived

Above all, Lynn cherished her family. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy, and her legacy lives on through them.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers at the Minnedosa Hospital and Shoal Lake Personal Care Home and other medical facilities for their compassionate support over the past 12 months.

A celebration of  Lynn’s life will be held on June 11th, 2026  at 2:00 p.m. at the Minnedosa Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Cancer Care or a charity of your choice.

We thank you for joining us in remembering Lynn, a woman who lived a life full of love, laughter, and service. As we say goodbye for now, we hold onto the promise of meeting again.
