Lucie Desjardins Obituary

Mom was born on January 11th, 1925 to Lucie (Beasse) and Leonard Bourdin. She was one of 11 children. She attended Carrick school near Makinak until grade 8. Afterward, she worked at Ste Rose Hospital in housekeeping and laundry. Mom also worked as a health care aide where she acquired knowledge and experience which proved invaluable later in taking care of her large family.

When WW11 broke out, she and her sister Dale moved to Victoria BC where her brother Rene was stationed. Mom and her sister, always eager and industrious, held various jobs during these difficult times- working as health care aides at St Joseph's hospital, waitressing at the Hotel Vancouver, processing Salmon at the fish factory and even picking fruit in California.

In 1946, mom moved back to Manitoba. The following summer, she met her future husband Pierre at a church picnic where she undoubtedly captured his attention with her dark hair, beautiful green eyes and vibrant personality. They were married 4 months later in a double wedding with Pierre's sister and her husband. They raised 8 children on a mixed farm a few miles from Laurier.

Mom was an extremely hard working woman who always had multiple projects on the go: tending 3 large gardens, (staffed by her 8 children and plowed by dad's farm machinery due to their size), raising chickens, and milking cows, being a 4H leader, sewing almost all our clothes (right down to the underwear), picking and processing wild fruit, doing many loads of laundry in the wringer washer and hanging clothes on the line outside, making 10 loaves of bread every week, making delicious meals out of whatever she had on hand as well as tending to our needs. Mom never complained about her heavy load and was loving and patient with us. She of course had her limits and would take out the strap and apply it to our backside if warranted.

Mom completed her GED in her late 40's. She started working outside the home around this time, taking a job (that she was overqualified for) at McCreary hospital in the kitchen and housekeeping departments.

Mom and dad separated in 1976. Afterward, she lived in Dauphin, Brandon and Neepawa. While in Brandon, she developed her own house cleaning business and fostered special needs adults, while raising her 3 youngest children as a single parent.

Mom had a strong faith in God that guided her life and taught her family to believe in the Lord from birth. She read her bible daily and prayed for her family faithfully. She demonstrated her values by volunteering in Hawaii at Youth With A Mission (YWAM), at soup kitchens and after moving to Neepawa, she continued to work as a volunteer at a Senior's housing meal program. She was generous with her time and helped all of her children when they had babies or needed help in some way. She seemed to have limitless energy and could run circles around us well into her 70's. Mom was a woman ahead of her time in so many ways, wise and kind, always thinking of others less fortunate and helping out.

Mom is survived by her brother Gerard (Barb), her 8 children: Daniel (Lizette), Gisele (Gilbert), Michel (Marina), Marie (David), Adele (Layne), Valerie (Clarence), Pierre, Lucie and special daughter Karen. Grandchildren: Tara-Lee (Dean) Wesley, Crystal (Remi), Michel, Joel (Amber), Ivan (Rachel), Jarrod, Danny, Jonathan (Nicole), Lise(Mark),Copeland, Pierre (Jessica), Luc, Emily, Brooke and Julien. Great grandchildren: Kaisha, Tianna, Peyton (Sam), Hannah, Sophie, Nora, Simon, Oliver, Taryn, Ian, Roman, Luna-Rose, Joel, Alida, Silas, Bradley, Noah, Isabel and Soline.
