Sidney Keele Obituary

KEELE, SIDNEY RAYMOND – Sid slipped away from us February 18th at 11AM in Ste Rose General Hospital at age 84. His wife Reba and his son Lyall were able to be by his side and his thoughts were with his daughter Leslie, who passed away in 2019.

Sid was a fun-loving, loyal, hard-working soul who kept his incredible sense of humour until the very end. In the Winter he loved hockey, curling, and keeping snow off his driveway. In the Summer he spent time golfing, fishing, gardening, and caring for his lawn. He was always ready to go for coffee with his friends, try new things in the kitchen, play a game of cards (or accept any form of competition), have a drink of rum or indulge in some form of ice cream! Sid was also an avid crossword puzzle solver and challenged a number of Sudoku books and cryptograms. Learning was his passion and keeping mentally sharp was his lifelong goal. Growing up in Elm Creek, Manitoba, Sid excelled at hockey, curling and baseball. After graduating High School, Sid spent one year at Normal School before beginning his career as a teacher at the one-room schoolhouse at Breadalbane, near Lenore, MB. He taught various subjects and grade levels at Eden, Hamiota and McCreary, but spent the majority of his tenure teaching high school Math, before retiring at age 55. Wanting to stay busy following his retirement, Sid was a substitute teacher, an auctioneer aid, helped at the Ste Rose Auction Mart and Musgrave Enterprises, called Bingo, and did some volunteer accounting for various organizations. Sid and Reba lived happily in McCreary for the last 52 years.

At one time Sid remarked that “if I had known Grandchildren were this much fun, I would have had them first!” Sid relished every minute he got to spend with his four Grandsons – Raymond and Thomas Peloquin of Vancouver and Reilly and Carter Keele of Brandon. He played UNO and travelled with them, watched them play sports and encouraged them all to pursue their dreams. He was extremely PROUD of you all and he loved you dearly. His surviving family include his adoring wife Reba, Son-In-Law Florian, Grandsons Raymond and Thomas, Son Lyall (Kathy) and Grandsons Reilly and Carter, Sister Shirley, his Brothers Ron (Margaret) and Herb (Karen), Sister-In-Law’s Lorraine and Evelyn, Brother-In-Law Joe and a number of loving nieces and nephews, and a multitude of amazing friends. Those we lost before Sid were his Daughter Leslie, his Brothers Jack and Reg, Sister Marlene and her husband Glen, Sister-In-Law Elaine and her husband Ken, and his Sister-In-Law Gail.

You didn’t have to be related to be family to Sid as he had three unofficially adopted “Sons” - Leslie’s husband Florian Peloquin, his nephew Dale Horn and Tristan Duchart. He deemed Ken Horn and Glen Sealy as Brothers, loved his friendly rivalry with his Rummy opponents Gordon Bennett, Lang Musgrave and Cecil Green and was extremely close with Bob Gillis, Venton Beatty, Sid Barnes and Barry Knight. You were all an important part of Sidney’s happiness and he enjoyed spending as much time with you all as he could. While no official ceremony will be held, the family will be doing a Celebration of Life at some point in the Future.
