Vivian "Babe" Evans Obituary

Babe (Vivian) Evans was born in Armley, Saskatchewan on the farm, in 1929 on the 30th of November and  passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026 at the Rideau Park Care Home.  They called her “the babe” as she was the first grandchild and the name stuck. Her parents were Tom Bett, Grace (Shiltroth) Bett and her siblings were Bernice, John and Elva. She moved with her family off the farm in Armley to Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1936 where her grandfather had already moved. Mom went to different schools in Flin Flon and graduated from Hapnot Collegiate. Babe met Richard (Dick) Evans while still in high school in 1946 and they were later married on February 14, 1948. They raised 4 children together; Harley (Joan), Aleida(Fred), Kerry (Lisa) and Rhonda (Lyle). Babe and Dick added on to their house on Wallace Avenue in the early years to accommodate a growing family and she lived there until 2020. Dad passed away accidentally in 1981 and in her own words, nothing was ever the same again.

One of Babe’s interests was Curling in her younger years, and watching it avidly later. One of her fondest memories was representing Ross Lake Curling Club in the Manitoba Provincial Playdowns (one of only 14 rinks)in 1989. She enjoyed sewing for her daughters when they were younger. She was an accomplished knitter and crocheter. Babe also took up square dancing and went to Australia with that group on a tour.

Her 9 grandchildren were very important to her and also 9 great grandchildren later in life. She also loved the Cabin that they bought on Athapap lake and the “farm” that was to be their retirement home in Birch River, Manitoba. Babe worked for the Kiddy Korner day care center in 1977/78 and later in 1979 got on at the Northern Lights Manor as an Aide. She worked as an activity director there and also took shifts to cook in the kitchen. She made many good friends there, that later helped her with the grief and loss of her husband Dick.

She was a member of the Anglican Church and served on committees there. Babe also was a member of the Ladies Legion and Rebeka’s Evergreen Lodge #56 in Flin Flon. Mom was very self-reliant in her life after Dad passed away and stubbornly maintained her independence till she left the house after a fall in 2020, to move to Sokol Supportive housing in Brandon. In 2025 she was then moved to Rideau Park Care home after a brief stay in the hospital in Brandon.
