Walter "Wally" Woychyshyn Obituary

June 13, 1924 – April 6, 2024 (2 months, 1 week shy of ‘100’)

Walter (Wally) passed away peacefully at the Minnedosa Personal Care Home in Minnedosa Manitoba with niece Dianne Sandstrom and nephew Stephen & wife Kim Woychyshyn by his side.  Unfortunately, daughter Enid & husband Jeff Hayes were enroute from Texas and were unable to be by his side.

Wally was born June 13, 1924 on the family farm in the Ozerna district near Sandy Lake, Manitoba to Martha (Zatylny) & Nick Woychyshyn. He was the fifth child of nine children (five brothers & three sisters).

Wally spent three years overseas in the Canadian Army, then returned to Winnipeg hauling gravel with his own truck. This is where he met his soulmate Nellie Chupka and married on October 26, 1947. For 5 ½ years early in their marriage they raised their nephew, Melvin. Spring 1953 brought them to the family farm in Newdale.  July 1953 their only daughter Enid was born. In 1966 they purchased a business in Swan River (Wally’s Billiards & Shuffleboard). Selling the business in 1975 they moved to Minnedosa where Wally helped out on the Boyd Grant farm and after delivered Winnipeg Free Press in Parkland Region. Wally & Nellie bought a small motorhome in the early 1990’s and travelled east to west in Canada, including many family reunions, with a favorite destination Manitou Hot Springs.  They enjoyed gardening and sharing produce. They were known for their perogies. Wally was a charter member of Parkland Council Knights of Columbus and involved with St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church in Minnedosa.

January 2021 Wally was admitted to Minnedosa Personal Care Home where he loved the care and attention he received and enjoyed playing cribbage & winning! He enjoyed visitors to share a story or decipher a photo from “olden days”.

Wally was predeceased by parents Nick & Martha Woychyshyn, his loving wife Nellie (March 2007), five brothers Michael (Mike), Anthony (Tony), John Wayne (Woychyshyn), Joe, Marshall and three sisters Kay (Baker), Mary (Melcosky), Sophia (Stayko).

He leaves to mourn his only daughter Enid and her husband Jeff.  Special nephew Melvin, wife Linda and their son Michael. Sister-in-law Sharon in BC and numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces.
